“What is a pet microchip?”

A microchip is a radio-frequency identification (RFID) transponder that carries a unique identification number. It is a very tiny rod made of safe, sterile, biologically safe surgical-grade glass and is roughly the size of a grain of rice. When the microchip is scanned by a Vet, animal control, shelter, or anyone with a universal microchip scanner, it transmits the ID number.

There’s no battery, no power required, and no moving parts. It is not a GPS device and it does not transmit any data until it is scanned with a specific scanner. It is not exactly the same, but the process is similar to scanning a barcode on an item at the grocery store.

“Why should I have my pets microchipped?”

Statistics show that 1 out of every 3 pets in the U.S. will go missing at some point in their lives. This applies to not just dogs, but cats and other animals as well. Without a microchip, the odds of your lost pet being tracked back to you and returned are very, very slim. Unfortunately our city/county shelters here in the South, like many across the U.S., are
extremely overburdened and out of room. After their 3 to 5-day stray hold is up, many stray/lost pets end up being sent on transport up North or to other rescues, in order to make room in the shelter and better improve their chances of adoption. Unfortunately this also means an even smaller likelihood of your pet being returned to you. There are also unscrupulous “rescue” groups and dognappers right here in the Chattanooga area who target lost pets and animals alone in yards, then “adopt” them out for exorbitant fees and refuse to return them without proof of ownership.

A microchip provides concrete proof of ownership, and allows you to be contacted immediately when your pet is found and someone scans them. Microchipped pets are more than 20x more likely to be reunited with their families than those with collars or nothing at all.

“How is a microchip implanted?”

The microchip is injected under the loose skin between your pet’s shoulder blades for dogs and cats, and in other slightly different locations in other species. It is no more invasive than a vaccination, virtually painless, and most pets don’t even notice when it is being done. It takes less than 30 seconds to do and is extremely safe!

Here at Freddie’s Felines, all microchips are implanted by a Licensed Veterinary Technician with years of experience. The area is first sterilized with 4% Chlorhexidine surgical scrub solution, then the microchip is implanted using a single-use, sterile needle injector from a sterile individually-contained pouch direct from the manufacturer. We use NanoChips, which are the smallest microchips on the market and thus are able to be placed using a smaller applicator.

“What happens if my microchipped pet goes missing?”

After you get your pet microchipped, you then MUST register them to a database that is connected nationally. Usually, you register to the same company’s database who makes the microchip you used, but there are some separate ones.

Then if your pet goes missing, this is what happens:

First, you log in to the database where you registered your pet or call them, and submit a Lost Pet alert.

When someone finds him/her, and brings the pet to be scanned, the microchip number comes up on the screen of the scanner, usually along with the manufacturer or company.

The person then enters the microchip number into the search bar on AAHA’s national microchip search page, which searches the 30 top registries and manufacturers (which is pretty much all of them):

https://www.aaha.org/petmicrochiplookup

http://www.petmicrochiplookup.org

The results that come up show every database where the microchip is registered, and that database’s information. The finder goes to that database, enters the microchip number, and is given the contact info for the owner. Usually most owners have their e-mail and their phone number listed. The person or shelter then can contact you and reunite you with your companion!
This is the universal scanner I use, and how it displays the number once the pet has been scanned.
This is how the search results appear after the microchip ID number is entered on the AAHA universal lookup tool. It shows that this microchip is enrolled with the NanoChip database and is a NanoChip brand microchip. It provides the website and the number for the person or shelter to call.
The person then goes to that database, enters the microchip number, and is given the contact info for the owner. Usually most owners have their e-mail and their phone number listed. As you can see, it also shows that the pet was reported Lost, and there is also a secondary contact listed, which I will explain below.

“Why do you choose to use NanoChip rather than another brand?”

I love NanoChip for several reasons. They are the smallest chip available on the market today, with the most advanced and current frequency technology for better success. But the main reason I love NanoChip is that I can register all chips under my rescue organization when I first order them. Then when the pet owner registers their pet after microchipping, BOTH the owner AND Freddie’s Felines then become listed as contact options if the pet goes missing and then gets scanned. This adds another layer of protection for the pet — because if the owner cannot be reached for some reason, my rescue is listed as the Secondary Contact and will be contacted. Then I am able to go pick up the pet and hold him/her until the owner can be reached, keeping them safe, OR I can reach out to the owner/drive them home myself as I keep a record of all names, addresses, and phone numbers for pets I’ve microchipped through Freddie’s. This gives a 100% guarantee that the pet will be returned back home where he/she belongs.

In addition, Fetch ID (the database that NanoChip provides) gives some pretty amazing benefits for a very, very low registration cost. For $20 per YEAR, you not only get the ability to ensure your pet has multiple contacts listed and lost pet alerts, but they also provide $1,000 worth of assistance for veterinary bills in the event your pet was injured or he/she received veterinary care while lost, and $500 toward a plane ticket to bring your pet back home if they were found more than 500 miles away. THAT is seriously some amazing benefits if you ask me!
Main Contact AND Secondary Contact, Lost Pet alerts and posters, assistance with veterinary bills in case of injury, and assistance with flight home if your pet ends up too far away. How can you say no?!

PLEASE MICROCHIP YOUR PET! It can and does save lives, and can help support your pet in case the worst of the worse happens.
